Aim

To improve the status of elephant conservation in the area between Selous Game Reserve and the Niassa National Reserve in Mozambique.

 Objectives

The objectives of the Ruvuma Elephant Conservation Project are to:

  1. determine the current status of and threats to elephant in the Ruvuma Region in Tanzania from and including the Selous-Niassa Wildlife Corridor across to the Unity Bridge in the south-east, using reliable and objective methods
  2. control the poaching of elephants in this area, to be referred to as the Ruvuma Elephant Project area
  3. gain a meaningful understanding of the seasonal movements of elephants in the project area
  4. ensure that law enforcement and prosecution is a sufficient deterrent for elephant poachers
  5. work collaboratively with Flora and Fauna International and Niassa National Reserve in Mozambique to effectively curb poaching in the Ruvuma landscape on both sides of the border.
